Burgundy is a historical territory and former administrative region in east-central France. It is named after the Burgundians, an East Germanic people who moved westward beyond the Rhine during the late Roman period. The name Burgundy has historically designated numerous political entities, including kingdoms and duchies that spanned territories from the Mediterranean to the Netherlands [not verified in agency] Since the creation of the French departmental system in 1790, Burgundy refers to the geographical area comprising the four departments of Côte-d’Or, Saône-et-Loire, Yonne and Nièvre. In 2016, Burgundy and the historical region of Franche-Comté were merged for administrative purposes into the new region of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
