Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club
Golf club page
10.10. — green fee per player: Green Fee 18 Holes (10:00)
For Italian golf, this club is synonymous with history. It was the dawn of the 1900s and Lake Como was a popular destination with elite Anglo-Saxon tourism. Included amongst its admirers was the engineer Henry John Mylius who, with some of his fellow countrymen, decided to build a small golf course. They discovered the right place at Grandola e Uniti, and founded the Golf Club “on the Menaggio and Cadenabbia side of the Lake” in 1907. Don’t miss the chance to visit this historic club and enjoy, in addition to its 18 holes, the clubhouse, warm and welcoming like no other with a lovely bridge room. The club’s pride and joy is its golf library which, with more than 1200 volumes – the oldest is dated 1682 – has one of the best collections amongst libraries on the subject in the world, so much so that even the librarian at the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in Scotland, the homeland of golf, borrowed some unique volumes to photocopy them. It is located on the Prealpine slopes sheltering Lake Como at 455 meters of altitude, and the difference in level is notable: there are continuous ups and and downs and, as short as it is, the course is quite delicate and demands great precision. This is a course that continues to maintain the technical features of golf from days gone by despite the changes made to it over the years, and players are constantly tempted to alternate powerfully aggressive and cautious strokes. Technical Details Course: 18 holes, Par 70, 5482 meters Architect: John Harris Topography: short course, narrow fairways Distinctive features: the second oldest golf club in Italy; it represents the spirit in which the game of golf is played. It evokes the spirit of the game Pro’s comments: The long history of the club and its extraordinary beauty reassure those who love and appreciate traditional golf that they are in the “right place”. But the last two holes, short yet very delicate par 4s, are a strong temptation for all golfers who are able to hit further than 220/230 meters with a single drive. Precise players can putt for an eagle, but the recklessness of an error of just a few meters will cost you dearly. Great fun.

Valtellina Golf Club

12.10. — green fee per player: Green fee 18 Holes (10:00)
In a really stunning environmental context, surrounded by a crown of mountains that embraces the golf course, you can find Valtellina Golf: we are at Caiolo, at the bottom of the valley just outside Sondrio and the view ranges over the terraced vineyards and the chestnuts’ woods up to the Adamello mountain. At 300 m. above the sea, you can play from March to November the rather modern designed course, where long fairways alternate with some very short ones, a very challenging round, with many hazards. Often, in the early afternoon, the wind (the “Breva” as it’s called here) which blows from the West – from Lake Como – to East towards the Adamello, demands an accurate game. The course is rather flat, but water hazards make some of the holes quite tricky and the out of bounds need to be carefully considered too! Technical Details Course: 18 Hole Course, Par 71, 5743 m Architects: Fulvio Bani, Fernando Grattirola Topography: Flat with many water hazards Distinctive features: The scenic setting and the breathtaking views over the surrounding chestnuts woods and vineyards are likely to distract the player. Also thanks to the small water hazards, it is a very enjoyable golfing experience for all level of golfers. Pro’s comment One of the most complete routes on the Italian panorama. Long but fairly wide holes, alternating with narrower but more affordable holes. Some greens are very undulating and not easy to interpret. Beautiful the hole 3, long par 5 with frontal water obstacle at the first shot and out of bound on the left or the 13, delicate par 4 with the green well defended by a large frontal water obstacle. It is worth mentioning the high standard of maintenance, which makes the course almost always in optimal conditions: one more reason to come and play here if you have the opportunity.

Golf Club Lanzo
Golf club page
14.10. — green fee per player: Daily Green Fee (10:00)
Set in a secluded location in a wooded area of natural beauty, not far from Lake Lugano and the Swiss border, with stunning panoramic views over the surrounding mountains, Lanzo presents a golfing experience a little out of the way, but worth it if you are a lover of peace and tranquility. Designed by renowned architect Donald Harradine on the gentle slopes of the “Pian delle Noci” (translated as Walnuts Plateau) at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level, it was opened for play in 1962 and it winds through ancient walnut woods and green meadows. Despite the limited length, Lanzo Golf Course is as enjoyable as it is challenging: a never boring round, due to the clever use of double tees which make it versatile enough to challenge players of thee very skill level. Designed for players who want to enjoy a pleasant round of golf rather than one fraught with difficulty and complications, it is not too long. However some holes do offer up more of a challenge. The most difficult one is the 4th, a 347 m Par 4 dogleg on the right with a small and tricky green. A well placed tee shot is just the beginning of successfully negotiating this challenging hole. The clubhouse, after undergoing an extensive refurbishment program, promises a warming welcome after your game. Relax in a charming space where superior quality local food is served and enjoy an outdoor lunch on the pleasant terrace overlooking the course. Being close to the lake, the climate here is mild and pleasant in spite of the altitude. A perfect spot for a golfing weekend! Technical Details Course: 9 holes, Par 68, 5094 m Architect: Donald Harradine Topography: Short, hilly course Distinctive features: Set at 1000 meters of altitude over sea level, a spectacular woodland 9 hole course. Golfers will remember Lanzo because it tests all aspects of their shot-making ability. Pro’s comment Perched on the hills of the homonymous valley, 9 rather tricky, yet delightful holes. From the opening one to the last hole, a succession of traps and treacherous greens, to be carefully handled, because even the smallest mistake could heavily affect the score. During the Summer months, with cooler temperatures and clear blue skies, a round here is a pleasure that I personally highly recommend!
